Sunlight, filtered through the cracks in the doors, painted long, dancing shadows on the floor. Amelia sighed, feeling a quiet sense of acceptance wash over her. It was hot, true, and the air was beginning to thicken, but, her breathing remained unlabored.

“Shouldn’t we call again?” David fretted, fiddling with his phone.

Amelia simply shook her head, the movement slow and deliberate. “They’ll get here. And in the meantime...” She looked around, her gaze lingering on the faded advertisements plastered on the elevator walls. “Well, I don’t mind the break.”

She sat down cross-legged on the floor, ignoring the grit and grime. Closing her eyes, she listened to the muffled sounds of the building, a low, rhythmic thrumming that was almost hypnotic.
